本片被视为是迪士尼动画再造巅峰之作，开创了迪士尼动画史的第二个黄金时代！当初在８０年代时期，百老汇式的歌舞片随着电影市场主流更替已逐渐褪色，以音乐歌曲为电影特色的迪士尼动画也因此面临很大的瓶颈，此时期推出的【狐狸与猎狗】、【黑神锅传奇】、【妙妙探】等片都不是以歌曲为主的迪士尼动画，１９８８年的【奥丽华历险记】尽管安排了流行摇滚的歌曲，票房也表现不差，但总觉得还是缺少些什么，无法像歌舞片年代歌曲那样与剧情十足契合。直到制作【小美人鱼】，迪士尼找来音乐剧创作家 Alan Menken 和 Howard Ashman ，才真正找到问题所在，那就是歌曲音乐与剧情的统整性，故剧情与音乐在【小美人鱼】制作过程当中是紧密结合的，而不是彼此分开作业最后才凑在一起。在剧情方面，迪士尼把原本悲惨的结局改成大团圆，并加入许多鲜活的角色，把小美人鱼 Ariel 塑造成迪士尼第一位具有现代个性的女主角；工作人员甚至打趣说，若华特迪士尼在世，决不容许像 Ariel 这样一位逃家的女孩！另外像是红蟹 Sabastian ，迪士尼原本设计是一位严肃而且正直的宫廷大臣，但是在 Alan Menken 和 Howard Ashman 加入作业后，把牠改成一位逗趣讨喜又充满天份的音乐家，这正是音乐与剧情紧密作业的一个成功表现，创造出令人满意的效果！从此迪士尼动画由衰转盛再造巅峰，原本已趋没落的百老汇歌舞片也因此在迪士尼动画里找到新生命！
